Wales’ first tidal stream energy project, which received approval in April, has secured GBP11m ($18m) in funding, including GBP6.4m from the European Union (EU).
Tidal Energy will use the funding to manufacture and deploy a full-size version of its DeltaStream device on a 12-month trial. The 1.2 MW tidal stream energy generator, which features three horizontal-axis generators, will be installed in 2012 on the seabed in Ramsey Sound, Pembrokeshire.
“This funding announcement comes at a pivotal stage in the project, and will provide Wales with a unique opportunity to develop and demonstrate a home-grown tidal stream technology,” said Martin Murphy, Tidal Energy’s managing director.
The project is the first stage in exploiting the region’s tidal and wave resources, which could provide up to 4 GW, he said.
