UK science park seeks microgrid developer

An open tender has been issued for development of a smart microgrid for a UK science and technology park.

The tender was launched this week by Britain’s Energy Coast (BEC), a property developer focused on low-carbon schemes. The firm is seeking a partner to develop a smart microgrid and master energy plan for the Westlakes Science & Technology Park in Whitehaven, Cumbria.

The site currently holds working space for around 2000 people and BEC said it has some small-scale renewable generation in place, including a recently installed biomass boiler. The firm wants to see this increase to a mixed generation and storage portfolio that “delivers significant capacity” to a microgrid, together with export opportunity.

The site “has the potential to become a beacon to science parks and estates across Europe,” said Joe Martin, BEC’s Head of Funding & Energy.à‚
