Transformers & Rectifiers (T&R) of the UK has announced that it plans to set up a solar panel manufacturing plant and a diesel genset producing plant in Bangladesh.

T&R specialises in custom-made 4-36 MW diesel gensets, and entered the solar panel market in 2010.

Steve Bandey, Managing Director of T&R, said: “I would like to form joint partnerships with local companies. We believe we could achieve something in 3-5 years. We will work on phases. I recognise the need for power here. I want my company to start manufacturing solar panels here, as such panels will be very important for the country’s future power generation.”

Bandey sees solar power as ideal for Bangladesh, as half its population lack access to the grid. In the next five years, the price of solar energy would fall to that of conventional energy, he said.

“Bangladesh will require more solar panels, as the country’s gas reserves will deplete,” he said.
