Start-up of fourth hydro turbine at Brazil’s Estreito

Aneel, Brazil’s power regulator, has approved the start of commercial operations of the fourth generation unit of the Estreito hydroelectric power plant.

The announcement was confirmed by Brazil’s largest power producer Tractebel Energia, which holds a 40 per cent in the project.

Tractebel Energia’s main shareholder is French utility GDF Suez.

The hydro plant, which is still under construction, is located between the states Tocantins and Maranhao.

The project will comprise eight 135.9 MW turbines, providing a total capacity of 1087 MW.
