Spanish renewables firm AMDA is to undertake a 150 MW wind power project in Mexico as part of a wider initiative with Spanish wind turbine maker Gamesa to develop 500 MW of wind power in the country.

In addition, AMDA plans to develop two additional wind farms in Mexico – Valle Hermoso (100 MW) and La Rumorosa (150 MW) – according to a report by Alimarket.

All those projects could enable Mexico to become a regional leader in wind power.

This idea was reinforced by Steve Sawyer, general director of the Global Wind Energy Council (GWEC), at the recent Mexico WindPower 2014, who said “Mexico is on the verge of becoming the new emerging market for wind energy”.

Mexico plans to produce 35 per cent of its electricity from renewable energies by 2024.
