Funding allows El Salvador to raise hydropower capacity

El Salvador’s Hydropower Executive Commission of the Lempa River has signed an agreement with Upd Consorcio Constructores to increase the output from the Cinco de Noviembre hydro plant.

Ansa news agency said that the project will receive $57m from the Central American Economic Incorporation Bank (Bcie), with the German Development Bank matching that amount and the European Union contributing $7.5m.

The project includes two new units with a generating capacity of 40 MW each.

Once the work is completed the capacity of the plant will be 174.5 MW.

The project is scheduled to be completed by 2016.
