Brazil’s Eletrobras to focus on large hydro in A-5 auction

Brazil’s state-owned power company Eletrobras has revealed its plans to bid for large-scale hydroelectric power projects in the A-5 auction, which is scheduled to be held in December.

Two projects in Eletrobras’ sights are the 700 MW Sao Manoel in Mato Grosso and the 145 MW Itaocara, located on the border of Rio de Janeiro and Minas Gerais, reports BNAmercias.

The A-5 auction, which will take place on 13 December, is the second such auction this year and requires projects to begin supplying electricity to distributors by 2018.

According to BNAmercias, Jose da Costa Carvalho Neto, president of Eletrobras, recently revealed a possible joint venture with China State Grid Corporation for the transmission contract to connect the 11.2 GW Belo Monte hydroelectric dam to the country’s interconnected grid SIN.
