Acciona Energia of Spain is to begin constructing the 45 MW Punta Palmeras wind farm, which will be the first such power plant owned by the Spanish company in the promising Chilean wind market.

The electricity generated by Punta Palmeras is estimated at 124 GWh per year, and will be supplied to the Chilean utility Colbun via a 12-year power purchase agreement.

Colbun, which operates in the Central Interconnected System (SIC), awarded the long-term PPA to Acciona following a tender process initiated in May 2012.

The Punta Palmeras wind farm, located in the region of Coquimbo, will be built, owned and operated by Acciona, with building work expected to start late 2013 with service planned for the end of 2014, Efe reports.
