Siemens’ Munich HQ to be powered by solar

Siemens AG’s new corporate headquarters in Munich, Germany is to be powered by rooftop solar photovoltaic (PV) panels and heated by ground-source heat pumps.

The company said 70 km of underground piping will provide heating and cooling, while one-third of the building’s power demand will be met by the PV installation.

The newly redesigned headquarters will consume 90% less electricity and 75% less water than the old building, the company said, while its primary energy requirement will be 52% below the limit set by Germany’s current Energy Savings Ordinance (EnEV) due to passive energy efficiency measures. à‚

The building, which will provide work space, a café, an art gallery, childcare facilities and a gym for around 1200 employees, is planned to open this week.
