At the moment, renewable energy only makes up 6 per cent of Ecuador’s electricity production. However, the National Electric Council (Conelec) is now promoting clean energy projects, especially those involving photovoltaics.

Conelec set a rate of $0.40 per kWh for solar energy, and this is stimulating projects by Spanish, Portuguese, Dutch and German companies.

Since 2011, Conelec has approved 17 solar power projects.

All those projects are expected to produce 272 MW, with an overall cost of $700m.

All the photovoltaic projects are expected to be up and running by 2015, according to El Comercio.
