Gunther Oettinger, the EU Energy Commissioner says the Commission will not be softening its approach to ensuring member states meet their renewable energy commitments.

The Commission is to refer both Poland and Cyprus to the European Court of Justice for failing to meet the Renewable Energy Directive, which entails the EU meeting 20 per cent of its energy from renewables by 2020.

These countries could face fines of up to €133,228.80 per day in the case of Poland, while the financial crisis-struck Cyprus is at risk of a lesser penalty of €11,404.80 per day, until the policy is fully adopted.
