Nicaragua seeks 90 per cent of energy from renewables

Nicaragua is exploring the feasibility to producing 90 per cent of its electricity from renewable sources by 2017.

According to a report in Energias Renovables, Emilio Rappaccioli, minister of Energy and Mine, said Nicaragua could generate 650 MW through a variety of renewable energy projects, which could become operational between 2012 and 2016.

Currently the country only uses six per cent of energy derived from renewable energy while the rest is produced by fossil fuel, the minister said.
