Mexican energy authorities have awarded 13 geothermal permits for areas located in seven states.

The permits equate to 3.3 percent of the country’s energy potential, according to reports by news agency Notimex.

Mexico is in fourth in the world in terms of geothermal energy, with an installed capacity of 874 MW.

For the first time the country has a specific regulatory framework that promotes investment, grants legal security and provides certainty to new projects both public and private, official sources said.
