Research on a thermally driven sorption heat pump is underway in Switzerland with the aim of boosting heating and cooling in buildings using low-grade heat.

Part of the THRIVE-project, funded by the Swiss National Science Foundation (SNSF), MOF Technologies is working with research groups including IBM Research, Hochschule für Technik Rapperswil and the Swiss Federal Laboratories for Materials Science and Technology (Empa).

MOF Technologies produces Metal Organic Frameworks (MOF) – highly porous materials that can be used in heat transfer processes. Dr Paschal McCloskey, CEO of MOF Technologies, explains: ‘MOFs can be applied to heat transformation processes and are superior to silica gels currently used.’

The partners are currently working to substitute electricity and fossil fuels used for cooling and heating of buildings with low-grade waste heat from industrial processes and thermal energy from cogeneration and renewables.
