India in bid to double renewable capacity

India intends to more than double its renewable power capacity to almost 53 GW by 2017.

Under proposals revealed in its latest five-year energy plan, the government wants to add 29 GW of renewable power between now and 2017. In the previous five-year plan, 12 GW was added.

The Ministry of New and Renewable Energy revealed that in the next five years it wants to add 15 GW of wind power, 10 GW of solar power, 2 GW of biomass and biofuels and another 2 GW of hydropower.
