Venezuela has taken steps to address the El Niño climate phenomenon which has affected reservoir levels in the country.

Output has been particularly affected at the Guri plant, which provides 60 per cent of the nation’s electricity demand of 17.5 GW , according to local press reports.

In 2015 the Guri plant did not reach optimal filling levels because it has not rained enough in the headwaters of the Caroni River.

This means less power generation from Guri to the national grid, which forces the use of electricity from thermal power plants, sources said.
