Peru has plans to build more than 20 hydropower dams on the main trunk of the River Maranon, which is the Amazon’s main source, amidst concerns about flooding and pollution.

The construction of the dams has been presented as in the country’s national interest but they are still largely in the consultation process.

Two of the most notable dams for the Maranon are called Veracruz and Chadin 2. Veracruz is expected to have a potential generating capacity of 730 MW and Chadin 2600 MW.

The company overseeing Chadin 2 is AC Energia, a subsidiary of Brazil’s Odebrecht Group.
