Chilean hydro project put on hold

Chile’s Supreme Court has upheld an appeal by environmental campaigners to withdraw permission for the development of the Rio Cuervo hydroelectric project in the south of the country, according to media reports.

The court’s decision overrules a decision by the regional environmental review commission which had approved the project earlier in May.

But the court said the environmental commission ignored a key recommendation to re-evaluate the soils in the area.

The Rio Cuervo project, which is being developed by Australia-based Origin Energy and Xstrata Copper of Switzerland, is set to be located in Puerto Aysen in the southern Chilean region of Patagonia.
