Chile’s state-owned company Codelco will put out to international tender the construction and operation of a 3 MW mini-hydropower plant close to a copper mining area.
The project is to be located near a washing channel which receives the waste from the copper extraction. The plant will take advantage of the energy that is dissipated in the washing canal. This will make an innovative way to produce energy.
There are mini-hydro power plants in other Latin American countries. In Colombia there is an 11.6 MW mini-station that collects water resources and uses them to drive turbines.
