Google (NASDAQ: GOOG) has participated as an equity investor in a 96 MW solar photovoltaic installation in Kimberly, South Africa. It brings to over $1bn the amount invested by the internet giant in renewable power generation since 2010.

The Jasper Solar Energy project entailed an investment of $260m and, with a contribution of $12m, represents Google’s first investment in renewable power in Africa.

The project also involves develop SolarReserve, Intikon Energy and the Kensani Group.
