Ten German firms are to visit the Philippines to evaluate opportunities for photovoltaic (PV) solar power projects under a programme organised by the German Agency for International Cooperation (GIZ).
Maria Cleofe Natividad, the Philippines’ ambassador to Germany, said solar would be vital to her country’s electricity plans.
“The Philippines aims to provide electricity to 90 per cent of all households by 2017,” she said.
“This can only be made possible by harnessing solar energy that can reach the most remote communities.”
In 2010, solar provided only 0.01 per cent of the Philippines’s installed capacity. Natividad described this figure as evidence of huge potential for development and expansion.
