The 19.9 MW Gemasolar concentrating solar power (CSP) plant has been officially inaugurated in Fuentes Andalucia, Spain, by King Juan Carlos of Spain and Crown Prince Sheikh Mohamed bin Zayed Al Nahyan of Abu Dhabi.
The plant is owned by Torresol Energy, a joint venture between the Abu Dhabi renewable energy company Masdar, and the Spanish engineering and construction firm SENER. Torresol Energy said that Gemasolar is the first commercial plant in the world to use molten salt thermal storage in a central tower configuration with a heliostat field.
The salt storage capacity enables the plant to supply the grid even when there is solar radiation. It is expected that Gemasolar will produce a net total of over 110 GWh per year, operating for a total of 6450 hours a year at full capacity.
