The Fort Huachuca military base in Arizona, US, has seen the commencement of work on its solar photovoltaic plant, which will be the biggest for any American base once completed.

The 14 MW Fort Huachuca PV plant will meet a quarter of the electricity needs at the base and is being built by Germany-based E.ON Renewables.

Tucson Electric Power (TEP, Tucson, Arizona, U.S.) contracted with E.ON to provide construction management for the project, and will own and operate the plant when complete.

Solarserver.com reports that the utility has been the energy service provider to the base for more than 70 years.

US Congressman Ron Barber (D-Arizona) at the groundbreaking event said, “When an organization as strong as the United States Army makes an investment like this, and brings together an innovative partnership between federal agencies and private industry, it is a powerful message to the rest of the services ” and the nation ” that solar is a solid investment and an energy source for the future.”
