DONG Energy has announced its decision to go ahead with the new 450 MW Borkum Riffgrund 2 offshore wind farm off the coast of Germany, the firm’s fourth in the country.

Expected to be fully commissioned in the first half of 2019, and will likely take DONG’s total installed offshore wind capacity to 6.7GW, according to Business Green.

The new wind farm will host the largest wind turbines in German waters – MHI Vestas’ 8 MW wind turbines, which have rotor spans of 164 metres.

Borkum Riffgrund received planning consent in December 2011, but this will now need to be amended to approve the use of the larger turbines.

Once completed, the project will provide enough clean electricity to power 460,000 German households each year.
