Desertec seeks to close Algeria plant deal

Desertec expects to sign an agreement next month to build a solar power plant in Algeria, says German newspaper Handelsblatt.

The proposed plant would be Desertec’s third, following planned plants in Morocco and Tunisia, said Dii GmbH CEO Paul van Son, according to the paper. Dii GmbH is the project management company for Desertec.

Backed by Siemens and Deutsche Bank, the Desertec Sahara venture was founded in 2009 to establish a network of solar-thermal plants as well as PV and wind installations from Egypt to Morocco.

Investment in these facilities, which would feed excess power from the region to Europe, could total €400bn ($547m), according to Dii.
