The Angolan government has awarded a consultancy contract to COBA, a Portuguese environmental and engineering consultancy, for the 2,070MW Lauca hydropower plant on the Kwanza River.

The consultants will provide design and technical assistance for the project in association with consortium partner Lahmeyer during the contract time period of five and a half years.

According to Hydro World, COBA will also extend support during contract negotiations, equipment design approval, inspections, shop assembly and final acceptance, besides overlooking civil construction works and deployment of electromechanical equipment.

In addition to six power generating units in the plant’s primary powerhouse, the developers seek to add a second powerhouse with a single 65.5MW unit at the bottom of the facility.
