American gas utility Sempra Sempra Energy (NYSE: SRE) is to join forces with BP Wind Energy (NYSE: BP) to develop the Auwahi Wind farm in Hawaii, US as part of an ongoing strategic partnership in wind generation development.

The latest project features a 21-MW wind farm, which will use eight Siemens turbines to generate enough renewable power for about 10000 average Maui homes.

Initial construction activities are underway and full mobilization at the site is slated to begin by the end of the second quarter 2012.

Sempra U.S. Gas Power will continue leading the development of Auwahi Wind and operate the project once construction is complete.

Such projects are encouraged in Hawaii as the state aims to reach its clean energy goal to secure 40 percent of its electricity from renewable sources by 2030.
