A new biomass-based combined heat and power (CHP) plant is to be built in the town of Nokia, Finland.

The €45 million ($48 million) project, to be undertaken by special-purpose power firm Nokianvirran Energia, will produce power and process steam for both tissue manufacturer SCA Hygiene Products’ paper mill and Nokian Renkaat’s tyre factory, as well as district heat to be distributed by utility Leppäkosken Lämpö.

The plant is to run on a 68 MW biomass boiler from energy and paper sector service and supply firm Valmet. The boiler will use local fuels such as timber chips, whole tree chips, milled peat and sludge from the paper mill.

The new plant is to be integrated with an existing plant (pictured), which features two gas-fired boilers with steam power of 57 MW and 110 MW respectively. The boiler replacement is expected to save 60,000-80,000 tonnes of CO2 per year.

SCA plant manager Heikki Mustaniemi said the new plant will decrease the firm’s dependence on gas, with the added bonus that the de-inking sludge derived from the tissue mill can be used for power production. 

“This investment will especially improve the price competitiveness of district heat compared with other heating methods,” said Juha Koskinen, managing director of Leppäkosken Lämpö.
