Alstom and Hydrochina Zhongnan Engineering Corp have won a contract worth more than €90m ($118m) to equip a hydropower plant in Vietnam.

The 1200 MW Lai Chau hydropower plant is on the Da River, in Lai Chau Province. Construction work started in 2011 and is expected to be completed in 2017.

Under the deal with Vietnam Electricity, Alstom and Zhongnan will provide all electro-mechanical equipment at the plant, with Alstom’s share of the contract worth over €60m.

The contract includes the delivery, testing and commissioning of three Francis 400 MW turbine and generator sets as well as mechanical and electrical auxiliaries.

The equipment will be manufactured at Alstom’s hydropower facility in Tianjin, China, which is Alstom’s largest hydropower manufacturing base.

Lai Chau will be the third largest hydro plant in Vietnam, generating more than 4.7 billion kWh every year to the national grid.
