Acciona mulls entry into Chile’s hydro sector

Spanish firm Acciona is mulling its entry into Chile’s hydroelectric segment by acquiring plants of up to 20 MW each, according to local news reports.

Through its Acciona Energia division, the company is planning to develop 1000 MW in Chile by 2022, including 800 MW in wind and solar photovoltaic (PV) projects, local daily El Mercurio said, quoting Jose Escobar, CEO in the country.

As a complement to intermittent solar and wind generation, hydropower will allow the company to diversify its portfolio and manage the risks, Escobar said.

Acciona already operates the 45 MW Punta Palmeras wind farm, and has built plants for other companies in Chile.à‚
