The Bangladesh Power Development Board (BPDB) has announced that it is to build a 5 MW solar photovoltaic (PV) power plant at Kaptai, with financial support from the Asian Development Bank.

The plant will be linked to the national grid.

The BPDB has already selected the site for the proposed plant, which is located on land it already owns and also houses its Karnafuli hydropower plant.

The BPDB will complete the project by 2013, as part of its goal of developing a renewable energy supply as a substitute for conventional sources.

The solar PV project will be jointly implemented by the Rural Electrification Board (REB), Local Government Engineering Department (LGED) and the BPDB.

It has been estimated that the project will result in a reduction of carbon emissions of over 5000 tonnes per year and will save on the purchase of fossil fuels.
