A task force has announced 3200 MW of new generation and transmission capacity for New York City.

Launched by Governor Andrew Cuomo the Energy Highway Task Force has set out plans that will require $5.7bn in investment.

Mr Cuomo launched the concept of the energy highway in his State of the State address in January.

The blueprint is based on 130 responses from 85 companies and organizations to a request for information issued in April by task force.

The plan calls for $250 million in state-sponsored renewable energy funding, and expects to leverage $475m in private investment and result in 270 MW of renewables. It pushes for $250m in smart grid investments and field studies on offshore wind development in the Atlantic Ocean.

The task force, made up of leaders of state agencies and authorities, wants the state to move quickly on the blueprint.
