Two nuclear power plants for Iran

Russia’s Rosatom has signed an agreement to build two nuclear power plants in Iran.

The memorandum was signed by the heads of the state atomic bodies, Sergey Kirienko of Russia’s Rosatom and Ali Akbar Salehi of Iran‘s Atomic Energy Organization (AEOI).

Iran already runs one Russian-built nuclear reactor in its Bushehr power plant.

The two pressurized water reactors will be built next to the Bushehr plant, Rosatom said in a statement. Construction and fuel handling will be monitored by the International Atomic Energy Agency.

After that, another two reactors could be built at Bushehr and four at a location still to be determined, Rosatom said. The company said it also foresaw setting up local production of zirconium-sheathed fuel rods in Iran, though the uranium would still originate in Russia.
