FINLAND, Sept. 29, 2000 (M2 Communications)à‚–Finnish nuclear power producer Teollisuuden Voima Oj (TVO) has said that Finland’s strong economy and high energy consumption will soon force the country to expand its nuclear power sector.
Mauno Paavola, chief executive at TVO, told Reuters that it was not a question of ‘if’ Finland would expand its nuclear power sector, but a question of ‘when’ it would do so. TVO has said it will apply to the government to build a fifth nuclear reactor despite the small prospects of profitability in the short run, according to Reuters.
Finland’s energy industry is concerned with becoming too dependent on energy imports from Russia. In addition, limited transmission capacity to other countries has increased the need for Finland to become more self-sufficient, said Paavola.
