TOKYO, Nov. 10 (Jiji Press)à‚–Tokyo Electric Power Co. will start using mixed oxide, or MOX, nuclear fuels next spring at a nuclear power plant in Fukushima Prefecture, President Nobuya Minami said Friday.
Tokyo Electric Power hopes to realize its MOX-based power generation plan after consulting with the Fukushima prefectural government, Minami said.
MOX fuels comprise uranium and plutonium extracted from spent nuclear fuels.
The MOX scheme was scheduled to start at the Fukushima plant last autumn, but was postponed when it was found that British Nuclear Fuels PLC has falsified quality control data on MOX shipments to one of the company’s power plants.
Tokyo Electric Power plans to realize another MOX-based power generation plan in Niigata Prefecture next spring.
