Taiwan’s president Ma Ying-jeou has said his country’s new No.4 nuclear plant in New Taipei City will only start operating after increased safety requirements have been met.

Ma said that additional work had been undertaken at the plant following the Fukushima disaster in Japan earlier this year.

If the facility is running by 2016, then the city existing plant No.1 will be decommissioned earlier than planned, he added.

The three existing plants in New Taipei City have a 40-year service period and Ma said this would not be extended.
