An application has been submitted to extend the life of the Muehleberg nuclear power plant in Switzerland beyond June 2013, with a $170m upgrade being proposed.

Nuclear power plantPlant operators BWK Inc. submitted a comprehensive maintenance application to the Federal Department of the Environment, Transport, Energy and Communications (DETEC) on 9 August, describing it as a “precautionary measure” to ensure the continued operation of the plant.

According to Nuclear Engineering International, the maintenance concept submitted to DETEC includes plans for: maintenance of the core mantle; upgrading a diversionary heat sink; an alternative spent fuel pool cooling system; fault-proof fuel pool instrumentation; and improving earthquake safety, including a plan for work on the Muehleberg hydroelectric power dam.
