August 28 2002 – Spain’s economy ministry said Monday that it hasn’t made a decision yet over whether to renew the operational license of the Jose Cabrera nuclear plant at Almonacid de Zorita, outside of Madrid.
The statement was in response to press reports Monday which claimed it had taken a decision. The ministry said it is awaiting a report for the nuclear safety council before making a decision.
The plant’s operational license is set to expire Sept. 15.
Spain’s state-owned news agency EFE said Greenpeace opposes renewal of the license and believes the Zorita plant is unsafe and should be shut down.
The plant is owned by Union Fenosa SA, Spain’s third-largest electricity company.
