Rosatom, the Russian state nuclear energy corporation is to announce plans to invest in the UK’s Horizon nuclear energy project.
The details of Rosatom’s interest are set to emerge from the Conservative Party conference today where the Centre for Policy Studies is hosting a speech from Rosatom’s head of international business.
Alexey Kalinin will discuss Rosatom’s willingness to develop a new nuclear skills base in the UK, and while it had not placed a bid by the original deadline for submissions, the company has consistently expressed an interest in the 6 GW project.
That interest looks likely to manifest in financial backing to one of the bids that have been submitted by rival reactor makers, or potentially express interest in buying into EDF Energy’s planned project at Hinkley Point in Somerset.
It represents a positive development, following the news last week of the decision by the Areva-China Guangdong consortium to pull out.
