The Nuclear Regulatory Commission (NRC) has renewed the operating license for the 556 MW Kewaunee Power Station, located in Kewaunee County, Wis., for an additional 20 years. Kewaunee Power Station is a single unit, pressurized-water reactor.

The decision to renew the license comes after thorough safety and environmental reviews of the application submitted by the plant’s operator, Dominion Energy Kewaunee, Inc.

After review of the plant’s safety systems and specifications, NRC concluded that the applicant had effectively demonstrated the capability to manage the effects of plant aging and that there were no safety concerns that would preclude license renewal. In addition, NRC conducted inspections of the plant to verify information submitted by the applicant.

The renewed license for the nuclear power plant will now expire on Dec. 21, 2033.

The Kewaunee reactor is the 62nd reactor license renewed by the NRC.
