Britain’s chief scientific adviser has said it would be “completely catastrophic” if the UK was to follow Germany’s example and abandon nuclear power.

John Beddington told a climate change debate in Seoul yesterday that nuclear was essential to combat global warming and added: “There is very clear analytical work that says it is not feasible for the United Kingdom to abandon nuclear without a completely catastrophic increase in energy prices. That is why the UK has a very different energy policy from Germany.”

Beddington’s comments echo those of UK energy minister Charles Hendry, who this week said: “We are making Britain a serious nuclear nation that does not compromise on safety or rely on subsidy.”
