Korea Hydro enters Romanian nuclear plant business

18 Mar 2002 – Korea Hydro & Nuclear Power Co. (KHNP) said it will sign today an agreement with National Company Nuclearelectrica of Romania at its head office in Seoul.

The agreement is for technical support and aid in the operation of the Cernavoda nuclear power station Number One, located on Romania’s Baltic coast which has been in operation since 1996. KHNP is also to provide help with the construction of the number two plant.

Situated at 180 km east of Bucharest, Cernavoda was the first nuclear power plant in Romania was designated to operate with five units of 700 MW each. Although Romania launched its heavy water nuclear reactor programme in the late 1970’s, so far only one unit has been commissioned, due to financial problems. The number Two unit is due for completion in 2005.
