TOKYO, Sept. 18, 2000 (Jiji Press) — Japan made clear its policy of promoting nuclear power generation at an annual general conference of the International Atomic Energy Agency in Vienna Monday.

Japan’s Science and Technology Agency Director-General Tadamori Oshima in a speech there stated that Japan will promote nuclear power generation and establish a nuclear fuel cycle, agency officials here said.

Japan has strengthened safety regulations and taken other measures to prevent nuclear accidents following Japan’s worst nuclear mishap at a nuclear fuel processing plant in September last year, Oshima told the conference.

Oshima also called on IAEA member states to conclude a protocol at an early date to enhance the nuclear weapons nonproliferation framework.
