Italian power utility A2A is planning to capitalise on its significant hydroelectric power presence in the Alps to provide power to neighbouring countries who are intent on reducing their nuclear power production.

France, Switzerland and Germany are being seen as opportunities for the company given all three have stated aims to diminish their nuclear capacities.

“We see increasing opportunities for exports to France, Germany and Switzerland,” A2A Chief Executive Valerio Camerano told Reuters in an interview in London. “The players placed in the northern part of Italy will be more engaged in that game,” he added.

Camerano says A2A’s power supply from hydroelectric plants is flexible enough to cater for neighbouring countries where import demand can fluctuate as they make greater use of renewable energy.
