EDF Energy has submitted its application to build a new nuclear power plant in Britain, said the UK’s Infrastructure Planning Commission (IPC).

The IPC will accept or reject the application for a plant at Hinkley Point in Somerset by 28 November, said the commission.

“If the application is accepted, the process of approving the building of the nuclear plant will take about 12 months,” said an IPC spokesman.

In the aftermath of the Fukushima incident EDF has put back its original start-up date for the plant of early 2018. But the firm has yet to set a new date for completion.

EDF applied for a site licence and an environmental permit for its Hinkley Point C nuclear plant in July.
