EDF has submitted applications to build its first nuclear power plant in Britain at Hinkley in Somerset, where it already has council planning permission for preparatory work.

The company hopes to begin generating power at the site in 2018 and has filed applications to proceed to the Office for Nuclear Regulation and the Environment Agency.

The Environment Agency has confirmed that it has received applications for the disposal of radioactive waste and the operation of backup power systems.

“We expect any new developments to meet high environmental standards so that people and the environment are properly protected,” said a spokesman for the Environment Agency.

The ONR confirmed that it had received an application and said that it would “assess EDF’s suitability to run a nuclear site.” Once EDF has been approved to run the site, it will have to apply for full planning permission to build the plant.
