China begins $476m nuclear power project

China has commenced work on a gas-cooked nuclear power project, set to cost $476m.

The high-temperature 200 MW gas cooled reactor is known as HTR-PM, according to a report from the Xinhua news agency.

The Huaneng Shandong Shidao Bay Nuclear Power Co., Ltd. (HSNPC) is developing the project in the coastal city of Rongcheng, east China’s Shandong Province.

Originally delayed as a result of the Fukushima incident, HTR-PM, which was independently developed by China’s Tsinghua University is expected to start generating power by the end of 2017.
