Chernobyl to be shut down in exchange for two new reactors

Oct. 29, 2000 (à‚–The president of Russia is scheduled to visit Ukraine on November 9 to discuss the shut down of the Chernobyl nuclear power plant.

The European Union has also promised to provide USD 600 million to build two new reactors in the country as a replacement for Cherbonyl nuclear plant, which will also be the focus of this meeting.

The group of G-7 nations, the most industrialised nations in the world had promised to provide around USD 2.3 billion (EUR 2.7 billion) for the complete closure of Chernobyl nuclear plant.

Out of this USD 1.5 billion (EUR 1.7 billion) has been set aside for the construction of two replacement reactors coming up at Rivne and Khmelnitsky, in western Ukraine.
