A New Zealand engineer and his Thai colleague died while in the process of rescuing two other plant workers at a biomass on-site power plant in Trang, Thailand on Sunday.

The accident happened when a couple were overcome after being caught in a gas leak overnight at a biomass power plant under construction in Yan Ta Khao district.

The two men tried to save the couple who had passed out after inhaling toxic gases in a three-metre wide, three-story ventilation chimney.

The incident occurred at the Plan Eco Energy Co construction site, next to Para Veneer 2002 Co – a subsidiary of rubber wood toy producer Plan Creations Co.

Plan Creations has begun building a biomass plant using leftover rubber sawdust and tree roots to fuel a 5 MW power generator to supply its electricity needs and sell the excess to the local electricity authority.

The couple were later rescued.
