Tractebel takes over Kazak power site
The government of Kazakstan has initiated large scale privatization of the country`s industrial infrastructure, which includes making privatization of power and heat utilities in Almaty Province a high priority. The Kazak government and the Belgian Tractebel Group signed an agreement in January 1995 giving Tractebel the right to build and operate power stations in the republic. In August 1996, Kazak authorities selected Tractebel to take over the Almaty Province power and heat generation distribution system. Current installed capacity of 900 MWe and 4,600 MWt will be further developed by Powerfin S.A., Tractebel`s international investment arm.
